Savannah, Georgia

Today, I drove to Savannah. It was a short hop, and I've been debating whether to count the distance in the total or consider it to be my starting point - and in the end, I've decided to include it.

I drove here because my goal of going coast to coast means starting at the coast, not a couple hundred miles inland. But my other goal of going ten thousand miles doesn't need to have a specific starting point, so the mileage counts. I'm also including the extra mileage from Savannah out to Fort Screven and back.

Since it's only mid-afternoon, I have some time to kill, and am waffling on the decision of whether or not to get a digital camera to take pictures while I'm on the road. On one hand, it would be a nice addition to the blog - but on the other, I'm just not into taking pictures.

I've never owned a camera, and from what I've seen, it often defeats the point of being there. I've seen people at parties, or on vacation, who are constantly snapping away, interrupting real life in order to get people to pose for a picture. Or worse, they take a snapshot of some landmark or vista, as if nobody's ever captured it on film before.

If I want to see an image of something, I can download one off the Web that's captures the exact same scene - and it would likely be a better image, taken by a professional photographer on a clear day (or night) without random people standing in the way.

And so, I guess I've talked myself out of it - or perhaps, I was never that into it to begin with.

Ah Savannah, that's a half hour from the house I pay for on a monthly basis. Tybee Island, where fort screven is, is my favorite place in GA for a silly reason..you can find all kinds of sea creatures during low tide and lots of turtles. Drive safe and enjoy.

What a fantastic idea your trip is! I'm a bit envious of your opportunity ... I hope you enjoy it. I realize there's no poll, but I have to voice my opinion on the side of taking a camera. Rather than taking pics of the old standard landmarks, you could capture the down-to-earth, nitty gritty side of a 10,000 mile, cross-country journey.

If you're taking back roads, you will undoubtedly encounter some scenes that you wished you had a camera to record.

But I understand what you mean about people constantly being behind the lense of a camera and missing the EXPERIENCE of being in new places.

I think you could achieve a workable balance of a few snapshots here and there along with your excellent prose.

I recommend a small Canon digital camera (one of the "Elph" series, like the 2100), they're so easy to use and very compact, and take decent pics. You don't have to be glued behind it all the time. Pictures could be a nice "spice" to your blog.

I'm looking forward to reading about your adventures!
